Auction Agent vs Dealer vs Broker — Which Is Cheapest?
There are three common ways to buy a car from Japan. They look similar from the outside but the price you pay — and how much choice you get — are very different.
The three routes
Auction agent (what JapanAuc is). We hold auction memberships and bid on any car across every Japanese auction on your behalf. You pay the real hammer price plus a clear, low commission. Widest choice, lowest markup.
Exporting dealer. A dealer sells you a car from their own stock at their price. Convenient, but you’re limited to what they hold, and their margin is built into the price — you can’t see the underlying auction cost.
Broker. A middleman who connects you to an agent or dealer and adds their own fee on top. An extra layer, an extra cost.
How each makes money
| Route | You pay | Choice |
|---|---|---|
| Auction agent | Hammer price + transparent commission (our 3.5%, min ¥35,000) | The whole auction market |
| Dealer | Dealer’s retail price (margin hidden) | Only their stock |
| Broker | Agent/dealer price + broker fee | Depends on who they use |
Why the agent route usually wins
Because you pay the actual auction price and see every cost, an agent is typically the cheapest way to buy — and you get grading transparency (we translate the auction sheet for every car). See exactly what we charge in fees & commission, or read how to buy start to finish.
