Nissan Skyline GT-R Generations (R32–R34) — Buyer's Guide

Updated August 22, 2026

The Nissan Skyline GT-R is the definitive JDM icon, and Japan’s auctions are where the best examples surface. Which one you can import depends mostly on age — and for American buyers, on the month it was built.

The generations

GenerationModel codeYearsEngine
R32 GT-RBNR321989–1994RB26DETT 2.6L twin-turbo
R33 GT-RBCNR331995–1998RB26DETT (revised)
R34 GT-RBNR341999–2002RB26DETT (the most sought-after)

All three use the RB26DETT twin-turbo straight-six and ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive. The model code is what appears on the auction sheet, and it is the fastest way to separate a real GT-R from a well-dressed lesser Skyline — see the full Skyline catalog for every variant Nissan sold.

The ones that aren’t GT-Rs

Most Skylines at auction are not GT-Rs, and some of them are the smarter buy:

  • GTS-t Type M (HCR32, ECR33) and 25GT-t (ER34) — RB20DET or RB25DET turbo, rear-wheel drive. A fraction of the price, the same silhouette, and far easier to find unmolested.
  • V35, V36, V37 — the later Skylines are a different car entirely: bigger, more luxurious, and in the case of the V37, sold in America as an Infiniti. The current RV37 400R is a 3.0 twin-turbo V6.

If your interest is the shape and the driving experience rather than the badge, an ER34 25GT-t costs a small fraction of a BNR34 and has none of the same theft or insurance headaches.

Eligibility by market

The two rules that govern most GT-R imports are age-based, and both count from the month of manufacture, not the model year. A car built in October is not eligible in January of the qualifying year.

MarketRuleStatus as of September 2026
USA25 yearsR32 and R33 fully eligible. R34s built through September 2001 are eligible now; the rest qualify month by month, with the last (August 2002) reaching 25 years in August 2027.
Canada15 yearsEvery GT-R through R34 is eligible, and so is the R35 for build months before September 2011.

Nissan built the BNR34 from January 1999 to August 2002, so the American window is closing on the remaining cars over the next year — which is exactly why prices for late R34s have been climbing. See import to the USA, import to Canada, and the import regulations guide for the rule in your market.

What to check on the sheet

GT-Rs were bought to be driven hard and modified. The sheet is where you find out which ones were.

  • R, RA or R1 grades mean repaired accident history. On a 30-year-old performance car this is common and not automatically disqualifying — but read the damage diagram to see what was repaired. Structural repair at the front rails is a different matter from a replaced quarter panel. Our grading guide explains the codes.
  • W marks on the diagram are repairs, and a car covered in them has had a life.
  • Modifications. Aftermarket turbos, ECUs, coilovers and exhausts are everywhere. A genuinely unmodified car commands a strong premium, and the original parts are almost never included with a modified one.
  • Rust. R32s from snow regions were salted every winter. Check the underbody notes on the sheet, and consider an extra inspection for anything from northern Japan.
  • Numbers matching. RB26s get swapped. Verify the engine number against the chassis where the sheet or the seller allows.
  • V-Spec, V-Spec II and Nür badges carry real premiums, and real incentive to fake. Verify against the chassis number rather than the badge.

What they cost to land

The hammer price is rarely the whole story on a GT-R. Auction-house fees, inland transport, freight and your own market’s duty can add a substantial amount, and on high-value cars the duty is calculated on a correspondingly high CIF value. Run the numbers with the landed-cost calculator before you set a maximum, not after.

Prices are rising, especially for the R34. We translate the full sheet and can arrange an independent inspection — register free to bid on GT-Rs at the source.
